Progression
Unlock monsters through the G-Force Lab
Complete a Rumor to open its Research Project, select that Project as the current one, then earn Research Points in an eligible mode. Completing the Project gives its attached reward; some desired monsters have further prerequisites before their own research becomes available.
Turn Tournament Mode off when earning progress. Keep Research Points, individual Character XP and Gallery Coins separate: they do different jobs.
Source coverage: PC, PS5 and Switch 2 review reports plus a Pipeworks interview. These are source-based steps, not our own game test. The PC Survival distinction below is kept platform-specific.

Find the relevant Rumor in the G-Force Lab
Read its actual condition: it can ask for particular play, a location, repeated completions or character progress. Several Rumors can progress at once. Do not assume that simply winning more matches satisfies a condition involving something else.
Step complete: the condition is fulfilled and the related Project is available. If it is still locked, read the remaining condition rather than spending RP on an unrelated Project.
Choose one available Research Project
Open Projects and select the one you want to advance. Unlike the parallel Rumors, only one Project is current at a time. Check its displayed reward and current progress before your next match.
Step complete: the intended Project is the selected/current one. Completing a Rumor and opening a Project are not the same as finishing the research.
Play a mode that awards Research Points
Reviewers report RP from normal Adventure and eligible Custom/Online battles; Respec also reports it from Destruction and Survival. Practice is explicitly excluded, and Tournament halts progression. Use the mode's actual result and your Project's meter as the check.
Step complete: the eligible result adds progress to the current Project. If your goal includes a character-level requirement, use the separate XP checks below too.
Inspect the finished Project's reward
A Project can unlock a monster, a battleground or another step toward the content you want. Some chains reveal additional prerequisites. Read what was actually awarded rather than assuming that the first Project in a chain finishes the entire monster unlock.
Goal complete: your desired monster is available in normal play with Tournament off. If a new requirement appears instead, follow that requirement as the next step in the same chain.

RP, Character XP and Gallery Coins do different jobs
| Track | What it advances | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Research Points (RP) | The current Research Project, toward its unlock reward. | Which Project is current and whether the completed mode awards RP. |
| Character XP | The individual monster's level and its associated benefits. | The same monster's XP/level, and whether that mode awards character experience. Pipeworks describes the benefits as applying within single-player modes. |
| Gallery Coins | Sightings, the historical-image gallery. | Gallery progress. A coin is not a Research Project payment or a character-level award. |
GamesHedge describes Gallery Coins as unlocking random Sightings images. This is why collecting a gallery reward does not establish that a monster's research or XP goal has advanced.
For a Rumor requiring character progress, track that particular monster. A larger research total and a gallery unlock answer different questions.
GamesHedge · PS5 review separates the three tracks. NintendoEverything · Atari and Pipeworks interview defines the single-player scope of character benefits.
Choose a mode for the progress you need
| Mode / setting | Research | Character-level goal |
|---|---|---|
| Tournament enabled | Progression pauses in the Switch 2 report. | Level progression also pauses. |
| Practice | No RP in Respec's PS5/Switch 2 report. | Use it to learn moves; it is not the cited progression route. |
| Normal Adventure / eligible Custom Battles | Reported RP route with Tournament off. | GamesHedge reports Character XP in Singleplayer and Custom play. Check the chosen monster and results. |
| Survival | Reported to earn RP. | Kaiju United's PC review reports no character-level XP. Do not generalize this report into a tested all-platform rule. |
| Normal Online battles | Reported RP route. | An RP award alone does not prove a Character XP award. |
For both research and a monster-level requirement, normal Adventure or eligible Custom play is the source-supported place to start. For an RP-only goal, Survival may still fit; it is a poor match for a character-XP goal in the cited PC test.
We do not provide a universal Survival multiplier, an exact fastest farm or an unverified all-platform XP table.

If research or Character XP is not increasing
Start by identifying the meter that is stuck. Then use the matching branch. These are checks derived from the reported system, not a claim that every stalled meter has one confirmed bug fix.
- RP and levels both stopped
- Check Settings for Tournament Mode. It intentionally halts progression in the Switch 2 report. Turn it off before an eligible normal match.
- I played Practice, but my Project did not move
- Practice is excluded from RP in Respec's report. Keep the Project current and use a mode that actually awards research.
- The Rumor is done, but the monster is still locked
- A Rumor opens a Project. Select the available Project and complete its research, then inspect the reward or any newly revealed prerequisite.
- I am earning RP, but not for the unlock I wanted
- Recheck which Project is current. Only one receives the active research progress. Confirm its displayed reward before the next match.
- The target Project is unavailable or a previous one has finished
- Read the target's current Rumor/prerequisite and choose an available Project. A completed research item is not evidence that the next item has already been activated.
- Survival earns research, but my monster's XP stays put
- This matches Kaiju United's PC report. For a level requirement, change to the source-supported Adventure/Custom route and check that same monster's XP.
- A suitable mode still appears not to count
- Record the platform, installed build, active Project, relevant Rumor condition and before/after meter from one completed eligible match. That evidence distinguishes the wrong track or condition from an unresolved issue when checking current platform support or developer updates.
Check that the desired unlock is really finished
Return to normal mode selection with Tournament off. Check the reward you earned and whether your desired monster is now selectable. For online use, the lasting unlock is the relevant path; Tournament's temporary local access does not supply it.
If the game shows another prerequisite, continue from the newly displayed requirement. The system can involve more than one Rumor or Project, so keep following the actual next entry rather than an old fixed Adventure unlock order.
For a local session where you only need immediate access instead, review the Switch 2 Tournament option and its limits.
You're done when…
Your unlock is complete when the desired monster is selectable in normal play with Tournament off. If the Project reveals another prerequisite, the monster unlock is not finished yet: follow that requirement next. Check RP, XP and gallery changes against their own separate goals.
