Learn combat with a short, repeatable practice route

Evidence checked 3 Nov 2026 UTC · Nov 2 reviews and current official listings

The short answer

Start in Practice, read your fighter's move list, and learn one short attack, one grab and one energy move before playing a normal match. The remaster rewards distance, timing and energy choices; repeating heavy attacks can leave you stuck in a windup or recovery.

Kaiju United's PC review reports full move lists with inputs and stats. Use your own platform's displayed inputs rather than importing a GameCube or another console's buttons. Respec's PS5/Switch 2 review explicitly excludes Practice from Research Points: switch to an eligible normal mode when your goal becomes progression.

A first-session practice routine

  1. Pick an available fighter

Start with default Godzilla if unsure. Keep the same monster during the routine so you can feel its range and recovery. Compare fighter styles if its basic movement does not suit you.

  2. Read the actual move list

Find the character's move list and inputs in your game. Learn a short melee attack, a grab and a special. The PC review describes button combinations rather than a system built around difficult motion inputs; this page does not provide a universal all-platform key map.

  3. Test reach before combinations

At close range, repeat the short attack. Move away and find where it misses. Repeat with the grab. Now return to a known distance and perform a short sequence intentionally. Success means you can distinguish “wrong range” from “wrong input.”

  4. Test one special and its energy cost

Use the special, observe the energy change and wait before repeating it. Compare your options with and without energy. Do not assume a powerful ranged move is a safe default at every distance.

  5. Add defense, then play a normal match

Practice blocking and repositioning between attacks. Try a Custom Battle against a CPU, or ordinary Adventure. Set a concrete goal such as landing a deliberate grab after approaching safely, instead of judging the session only by winning.

Respec describes deliberate windups and practice value. The official PlayStation fighter guide supports the monster-specific energy, speed and defense tradeoffs. No frame counts or guaranteed combos are claimed.

Use grabs, buildings and the edge deliberately

Learn your monster's grab reach before trying to throw everything. The PC review contrasts Godzilla 2000's quick, shorter grab with Gigan's slower, longer one. A missed grab can be a spacing issue even when the input was correct.

  1. Identify the grab input in your current move list and test it at a known close distance.
  2. Try a structure that the game allows you to pick up. Respec notes that only certain buildings are grabbable; a huge skyline does not mean every object is a weapon.
  3. When a monster grab succeeds, observe the available throw result and where the opponent lands. Kaiju United reports damage from throwing a monster into collapsing structures; no universal percentage is established here.
  4. Track the boundary. Respec reports electrified stage edges and camera trouble near them. Reposition if the camera or boundary is making your next action hard to read.

Destruction mode offers a way to explore movement and city objects without an enemy interrupting, according to the PC review. Use it to learn an arena, not as proof that a combat combo works against a resisting opponent.

Check Rage availability before looking for an input shortcut

Rage is a distinct part of each monster's kit. The official fighter guide names Kiryu's Absolute Zero attack; the PC review says Rage attacks are tied to individual character-level unlocks, with some requiring level 5. That is not evidence that every monster has the same threshold.

If a Rage attack is unavailable, first inspect that monster's level/unlock state and its current move instructions. Then follow the actual in-game condition. We do not have a verified universal activation or orb sequence for every platform. Use the current in-game instructions for your monster and platform.

For the temporary pickup/ability distinction, read the Rage and arena-item guide. A level condition calls for Character XP, not merely Research Points. Choose a mode that serves the level goal; the cited PC Survival report earns RP without character XP.

When a practice session is not helping

I know the input but it keeps missing
Repeat it alone at a fixed distance. Compare grab reach and facing before adding a combination or changing fighters.
My monster feels helpless after specials
Observe energy use and recovery; compare the fighter's weakness in the roster table. Test a shorter sequence that leaves you a response.
I practiced but earned no research
That matches Respec's Practice exception. Select a current Project and an eligible normal mode with Tournament off.
The buttons in an old guide do not match
Check the 2026 Remastered version, platform and in-game move list. This guide does not relabel an original-release button map as a tested remaster mapping.

Ready for a normal match?

You can repeat a short attack and grab on purpose, identify where they miss, and avoid exhausting energy without a follow-up plan. Use Adventure or Custom play to apply that lesson; choose research or character XP as a separate progression goal.
