Check lost PC audio after connecting a controller

Evidence checked 3 Nov 2026 UTC · review-build scope; no site gameplay test

The short answer

First check Windows' selected audio output. If that is correct and the fault appears only with the controller connected, test one different USB port. A Steam demo player using an Xbox 360 controller reported that changing from a front/top port to a rear PC port restored sound consistently. Switching audio output did not fix that player's case.

This is a bounded diagnostic route for the reported October demo symptom. It is not a confirmed cause, a guaranteed retail-build fix or advice to replace hardware. Source: Surge Brass's October 24 post and October 27 follow-up; both replies were read.

Separate output selection from the reported USB case

  1. Reproduce the same comparison

Check whether the game's sound works with the controller disconnected and disappears when it is connected. Note controller model, connection type, game build and whether other PC audio still works. A Bluetooth controller or sound that never works is outside the OP's exact USB scenario.

  2. Inspect Windows audio output

Microsoft's general Windows 10/11 route is Start → Settings → System → Sound → Output. Choose the speakers/headphones you intend to hear and check mute/volume. Test sound before changing anything else. This may resolve a wrong-output case, but it did not resolve the cited OP's issue.

  3. Try one alternate USB port

If output is correct and the connected-controller comparison still reproduces the issue, reconnect the USB controller to a different PC port. In the reported case, a rear port worked where the front/top port did not. Relaunch the game if needed and repeat the same audio check with the controller connected.

  4. Confirm both sound and input

Use the menu and a short local session to check that audio stays on and the controller still works. The OP's October 27 follow-up reports consistent recovery after the port swap; it does not identify the hardware cause.

If sound is still missing

Windows audio is wrong outside the game too
Continue with Microsoft's output/default-device troubleshooting. That is an operating-system issue to isolate before assuming a Godzilla-specific bug.
Only this game fails, even on another port
Keep the controller/model, build, selected output and connected/disconnected results. Check current game support/patch information with those details; the demo thread does not prove that reinstalling or deleting a save fixes it.
Only a Remote Play guest cannot hear
Check host and guest mute/volume and Valve's streaming-audio help. Use the separate Remote Play setup; that is not the same local USB symptom.

Do not disable security software, remove audio drivers or buy a new controller on the strength of this single community report.

A successful check is specific

Sound remains audible with the controller connected, and the same controller still operates the game. If not, you have a clear reproduction with output and one alternate-port result for the next support check, rather than an assumed universal fix.
